Chapter SEVEN
ZANE STARED at them both for a long moment before he unlocked the cell and opened the door. He didn’t say a word, simply turned on his heel and stomped back into the main part of the station. When he reached his office door, he paused and looked at them over his shoulder.
“Go home.”
Jefferson sputtered. “Excuse me?”
“I said, go home, Jefferson Lee. We’ll talk later.”
“Later? Are you kidding me?”
“No, I’m not. Not now. Go home.”
Zane’s icy tone froze Jefferson to the core. He glared at Zane, then stormed toward the entrance to the station. He held the door open for Clover, who went outside, then turned back to Zane.
“By the way, thanks for stopping by to check on Mrs. Beulah. She’s fine, by the way. It was nice of you to think of her since she’s been sick and all. And it was very nice of you to offer to give Clover and I a ride to the station, even though it’s only a couple blocks. Then again, anyone might think you just wanted to sneak a few minutes with me, and no one would say a word. Except that’s clearly changed, so who knows, you may have to come up with your own cover story now. But hey, at least I tried to think of something like the great and powerful Troy demanded.”
He didn’t wait to hear Zane’s reply, but turned and stormed over to where Clover stood waiting on the sidewalk. He looked at her and threw his hands up in the air in frustration.
“It’ll be okay, Jefferson Lee.”
“I know. Come on, let’s get you home.”
She looped her arm through his, and they walked the few blocks to her house. Jefferson made sure she was inside safely before turning back to Uncle Sherman’s. Luckily it was dark out, because he didn’t think he’d be capable of pasting on a happy face for anyone right now.
When he got back to the house, he stomped up the stairs and into the bathroom. He growled at his reflection in the mirror before he brushed his teeth. Then he stomped into his bedroom and changed into a T-shirt and his favorite pajama pants. “Ridiculous man. We’ll talk later, Jefferson Lee.” He deepened his voice in an approximation of Zane’s, then flopped down on the bed. “Later. Go home, Jefferson Lee. Like I’m some toddler who needs to be directed to bed on time. Who the hell does he think he’s talking to here?”
With another frustrated growl, Jefferson got back up and stuffed his feet into his slippers. He stormed back down the stairs and flung open the front door. His departure was halted by Zane standing there with his hand raised to knock on the door. Jefferson plowed right into him.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Zane growled.
“To see you! Are you kidding me? ‘Go home’? ‘We’ll talk later’?”
“Yeah, Jefferson Lee. Later. And here I am! What did you think I meant?”
“I don’t know! It seemed like you were sending me to bed like you were my dad or something.
